The central processing unit (CPU), also known as the processor, performs all the instruction, logic and mathematical processing in a computer. The better and faster the processor the faster software will load and run.
Programs use the random-access memory (RAM) to perform necessary tasks. The larger the RAM, the more programs you can run at one time. This is essential to run antivirus and antispyware software in the background while you are surfing the web.
The larger the hard drive the more information it will hold. You will need a large hard drive to edit videos and to store photos. A good economy PC comes with at least a 160 GB hard drive.
If you're going to do anything that requires sound (music and video editing, gaming, etc.) you will need a sound card.
Many towers include a monitor, but some don't. The monitor should be large enough that it doesn't cause eyestrain and LCD (flat panel) monitors take up much less space than their prehistoric counterparts, the CRT monitors.
The graphics card allows the PC to deliver video. The better the graphics card, the better the graphics. If you're going to do video editing or gaming, consider upgrading the graphics card.
Some computers come with a printer, some don't. The best packages come with an all-in-one printer, copier and scanner-very handy for the home office.
If you want to surf the web you'll need a modem. The type of modem can determine the Internet speed. Some are built into the tower while some sit outside the tower.
Manufacturer support is very important if you have a question or need technical assistance. Make sure the manufacturer or dealer offers support in the form of email, phone, live chat and documentation.
You'll be glad to have a warranty if something breaks. Most computers come with at least a 1-year warranty and extended warranties can be purchased.
Appropriate cables may include a printer cable, a power strip and phone line or cable to connect the Internet.
The PC should come with an operating system. Operating systems vary from Windows to Mac. Make sure the operating system fits your needs. Also, some computer packages come with word processors, security software and other programs. If it doesn't, you'll have to buy the software separately.
Other useful accessories may include a mouse pad, headphones, disks, furniture, cleaning tools, etc.
